I got to the venue late. I was surprised by the size of the crowd as I searched for my people. My surprise wasn’t because I didn’t think Malka deserved fans, I just hadn’t realized she’d been courting them.

When I found the reserved table I’d been looking for, I was thrown for a loop by the extra faces. I hadn’t realized Tali was going to be there, and along with Nick, Dalia, David, and Syl, Dalia’s sister, Melly, was there too. Our core group was expanding.

What I wasn’t thrown by was Ian’s absence. He’d put down money for the label, but he’d made it clear his priority was the anime film he was working on. He hadn’t uttered a word about Malka since they broke up, but I knew they hadn’t gotten back together. If he felt anything about that, he never showed it.

I took the empty seat between Tali and Melly. “Hey, didn’t realize you were coming,” I said to them both.

Tali flicked her wrist toward the stage. “Due diligence. I’m not letting you guys offer her a contract until I know exactly what we’re getting.”

When we first decided to start the label, Tali stayed on the sidelines, dealing with lawyers and contracts. But about a month ago, she asked if she could invest and take partial ownership. The four of us didn’t even need to discuss it; Tali knew music and she knew business. We would’ve been idiots not to bring her on board.

“You know the kind of music she makes,” I said.

“I do. But it’s not always only about the music, is it?”

I glanced around at the buzzing crowd. “Nah, I guess not. She’s got quite a fan club.”

“That’s because of her YouTube videos,” Melly interjected.

I turned to face Dalia’s younger sister. I didn’t know her well, but if she was anything like Dalia, she’d be cool as hell.

“What videos?” I asked.

“Babe, really? You haven’t seen her videos?”

I lifted a shoulder. “No…I feel like I’m missing something.”

She leaned in close, eyebrows raised. “I’m the only one sitting at this table who knows, aren’t I?”

My eyebrows knitted. “Knows?”

“About Emilia and Ricardo.”

I jerked back, wide eyes on her face.

She gave me a knowing smile. “Thought so.” She looked away from me, facing the stage. “When she moved back to Baltimore, Dalia and I helped her upload some songs to YouTube. I’m kind of shocked you didn’t know.”

“I had no idea.” No one except David knew what went down between Malka and me, and he didn’t exactly have his finger on the pulse of her life, so any updates I got were vague references from Dalia.

I surveyed the crowd again. “She’s got fans?”

“She’s doing amazing, Jasper.” Melly leaned in again, speaking close to my ear in a low, not-quite-friendly tone. “Don’t fuck things up for her. Not this time.”

“I’m not here to fuck things up for her.”
